The Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) was officially born on October 29, 1969, when the first packet-switched message was sent from UCLA to the Stanford Research Institute. The historic attempt to type "LOGIN" ended in a system crash after only the letters "LO" transmitted, but it successfully proved that separate host computers could communicate across long distances. By the end of 1969, a four-node foundation connected UCLA, Stanford, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Utah using specialized routers called Interface Message Processors (IMPs). Following the implementation of the Network Control Program in 1970, the infrastructure quickly expanded, and the entire system was declared fully operational in 1971 as a functional distributed network for academic and government research facilities.
